Automatic steering systems have been available for several years. Mechanical feeler systems, including the Tri-R system2, can provide moderate performance at a reasonable cost, but face limitations (Figure 1). Mechanical feel systems are crop limited and require a relatively stiff crop that has reached sufficient maturity for the feeler to detect. The feeler systems are both speed and curve limited due to the design.
